Kovalam is a beach town by the Arabian Sea in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, located around 18 km south of the city center.Kovalam was among the most prominent tourist spots in India during the hippy era. It still has a high status among tourists,who arrive mostly from Europe and Israel. Kovalam is finding a new significance in the light of severalAyurvedic salons, and recuperation and regeneration resorts which provide a wide variety of Ayurvedic treatments for tourists.There are alarge number of beach resorts in and around Kovalam. The sea port of Vizhinjam is about 3 km away and famous for its special varieties of fish, old Hindu temples, big churches and a mosque.
Kovalam is an internationally renowned beach with three adjacent crescent beaches. It has been a favourite haunt of tourists since the 1930s. A massive rocky promontory on the beach has created a
beautiful bay of calm waters ideal for sea bathing.
The southernmost beach, the Lighthouse Beach is the one most frequented by tourists, Lighthouse Beach got its name due to the old Vizhinjam Lighthouse located on a 35 meter high on top of the Kurumkal hillock.
Eve’s Beach, more commonly known as Hawa Beach, ranks second, in the early day, is a beehive of activities with fishermen setting out for sea.With a high rock promontory and a calm bay of blue waters, this beach paradise creates a unique aquarelle on moonlit nights.
A large promontory separates this part from the southern side.
Located at a distance of approximately 10 kilometres from Kovalam, the beautiful village of Chowara is popular for its beach. Coconut trees dot the sandy shores and the golden sands are an ideal place to relax and enjoy with family.
Neyyar dam is a gravity dam on the Neyyar Riverin Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, South India, located on the foot of the Western Ghats about 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram.Neyyar dam is situated at Kallikkad Panchayath of Kattakkada Taluk of Trivandrum district. The peak Agasthya kooodam is very near to Neyyar dam.Neyyar Dam is home to the beautiful and peaceful Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Dhanwanthari Ashram where you can take courses in Yoga and practice meditation.Tourists can hire a speed boat for Rs 250 per head to view the surrounding forests.
Valiathura is famous for its pier.Supported by 127 concrete piles, the pier had four 3-tonne cranes and one 10-tonner to unload cargo from the ships. Since the pier was located in shallow waters,heavy ships had to anchor in the deep sea and transport their ware in smaller boats.
Vellayani Lake, or Vellayani Kayal is the largest fresh water lake in Thiruvananthapuram district, of Kerala, India.This lake attracts a lot of tourists. Once in Kovalam, a visitor should not allow to miss the opportunity of seeing this wonder lake of freshwater. Its crystal-clear calm water, especially during moonlit nights, is a craze for the minds. The locals say a side of the lake is Kochu Kovalam, meaning tiny Kovalam.
